CARE FOR NATURAL HIDES

Natural hides are remarkably durable and require relatively little maintenance. With proper care, cowhide rugs, sheepskins and other natural hides can remain beautiful for years.

COWHIDE RUGS

For routine care, gently shake out your cowhide or vacuum using suction only. Avoid rotating brushes or beater bars, which can pull or damage the hair.

For small spills, blot promptly with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing. If additional cleaning is needed, use a lightly dampened cloth with a small amount of mild soap, working gently in the direction of the hair. Avoid soaking the hide or saturating the leather backing.

Like all hair-on-hide products, cowhide can show wear over time, particularly in areas of heavy foot traffic.

CURLED EDGES

Occasional curling along the edge of a cowhide is natural and can usually be corrected at home. Our How to Fix a Cowhide Rug Curl guide walks through the process step by step.

SHEEPSKINS

Regularly shake sheepskins outdoors to remove loose dust and help restore the natural loft of the wool. Light brushing can also help maintain longer-wool varieties.

Spot clean minor spills carefully and avoid saturating the leather backing. For significant staining or deeper cleaning, we recommend consulting a professional cleaner experienced with natural sheepskin.

ZEBRA & GAME HIDES

Authentic zebra and African game hides require very little routine maintenance. Remove surface dust gently with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum, following the natural direction of the hair.

Avoid excessive moisture, harsh cleaning products and prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight.

A NATURAL MATERIAL

Natural variations in color, markings, hair direction and texture are part of the character of genuine hides. Over time, some changes in appearance can occur through use, exposure to light and the natural aging of the material.

If you are unsure how to care for a particular Furug piece, please contact us before attempting intensive cleaning. We are happy to provide guidance specific to the material.
